The Great Michigan Whale

This may be the densest comic I have ever drawn. There are an awfully lot of panels per page. It feels like a thirty page story compressed into ten. In addition, it was drawn on a small scale. The original art area was only 5.5 x 11.5 inches. I'm not sure exactly why I chose to do this, but I have a theory. We all go through periods where we feel we have little control over our lives. It just seems like one big fall. In those periods we do things that make us feel like we are control. My method of finding faux control is to draw ridiculously small panels in my comics (and do some serious teeth grinding in my sleep). That being said, when I look at the comic, the first thing I see is an artist who is looooosing it.

I really do like the story though, and it's in Chicago, a city I love. It's got references to Moby Dick and Joseph Cornell. It's got punk rock and drinks and skateboards in it. It might be my favorite comic. No, really. Too bad I was wigging out when I drew it in 2008.
